Apple has reportedly decided to delay the launch of its next-generation iPhone Air after disappointing sales of the first version. According to The Information, the company has sharply reduced production of the current iPhone Air, which was introduced in September as Apple’s thinnest smartphone ever. The iPhone Air was expected to be a big hit for Apple, offering a super-slim and lightweight design. As the model hasn’t attracted as much consumer interest as Apple had hoped, the company is likely rethinking its future plans for the product.

Originally, Apple was reportedly planning to release a second-generation iPhone Air in the fall of 2026. The updated model was said to be lighter, feature a larger battery, and include a vapour chamber cooling system similar to the one used in the iPhone 17 Pro lineup.
Now, according to the report, Apple has no immediate plans to launch the iPhone Air 2 next fall. Instead, the company’s 2026 lineup is expected to focus on two key products: the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18 and a new budget-friendly iPhone 18E will likely arrive later, in spring 2027. Apple might still bring the iPhone Air 2 to market as early as spring 2027.
Meanwhile, latest leaks suggest that Apple has been testing a dual rear camera setup for the iPhone Air 2, with a 48MP main sensor and a 48MP ultra-wide lens. Despite this upgrade, the cameras would reportedly remain in a horizontal layout, unlike the vertical design seen on recent iPhones.
However, adding a second camera to such a thin phone may prove difficult. Apple’s engineers will need to find a way to include the extra hardware without increasing the device’s thickness- a challenge that could be one reason for the delay.
