Apple’s most awaited event of the year is finally here and the company has announced quite a lot of interesting hardware. Besides the new HomePod Mini and the very exciting iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini, Apple has also announced the new iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This year, the smartphones come with some serious upgrades, practically to every aspect of the iPhone, including 5G.
This time around, the iPhone looks different. The new iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max get a refreshed design. While the front looks just like the iPhone 11 Pro, the side and back are flatter, more like the iPhone 5. The choice of materials of construction remain aluminium and glass, but this time around, the glass is no ordinary glass. Apple and Gorilla Glass have worked together to come up with a new material called Ceramic Shield. This is essentially a matrix of nano ceramic crystals embedded into the glass that gives it added strength. Apple claims that the Ceramic Shield makes the glass on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max the strongest glass on a smartphone yet.
The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max had identical camera stacks, leaving just the physical size and battery life as a reason for consumers to choose between one or the other. The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max change that. The larger of the two phones features a slightly different camera stack, starting with the primary camera which now houses a larger sensor in comparison to the iPhone 12 Pro. The pixel pitch on the sensor is also larger, measuring 1.7μm. Apple has not revealed the pixel-pitch of the sensor on the iPhone 12 Pro. The telephoto lens on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is also different from that of the iPhone 12, offering a 65mm focal length in comparison to the iPhone 12 Pro’s 52mm. Perhaps the biggest update to the camera system is the addition of Apple ProRAW and the ability to shoot and edit videos in Dolby Vision. The Apple ProRAW format is a RAW file captured by the camera, but with all the tonal adjustments applied, without discarding any of the other information. Lastly, Apple has also doubled down on its push for AR, by incorporating a LiDAR scanner.
At the heart of all that makes the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max a truly “pro-grade” smartphone is the A14 Bionic processor. This is the world’s first commercially available 5nm chip, and Apple claims its up to 50 percent faster than the best chips from the competition. A14 Bionic features a 16-core Neural Engine that is capable of completing 11 trillion operations per second.
The Pro models of the iPhone 12 will start at a base storage of 128GB. The iPhone 12 Pro will cost Rs 1,19,900 for the 128GB variant, Rs 1,29,900 for the 256GB variant and Rs 1,49,900 for the 512GB variant. The larger, iPhone 12 Pro Max will start at Rs 1,29,900 for the 128GB variant, Rs 1,39,900 for the 256GB variant and Rs 1,59,900 for the 512GB variant. The Apple iPhone 12 Pro will be available in India starting October 30 while the larger iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available November 13.
