HIGHLIGHTS

Apple had originally planned to remove the USB-C port from the iPhone 17 Air.

The idea was to rely entirely on wireless charging and cloud-based data transfers.

However, the company ultimately decided to keep the USB-C port.

For a long time now, there have been several rumours that Apple will launch the iPhone 17 Air as part of the iPhone 17 series. This model is expected to replace the Plus model in the lineup and is said to be the slimmest iPhone yet. Now, a new report by Bloomberg has revealed that Apple initially planned to make this iPhone completely port-free but later dropped the plan.

Apple had originally planned to remove the USB-C port from the iPhone 17 Air, making it the first fully wireless iPhone. The idea was to rely entirely on wireless charging and cloud-based data transfers. However, the company ultimately decided to keep the USB-C port for now. One major reason was regulatory concerns, particularly in the European Union, which mandates USB-C as the standard charging port. Removing it could have led to legal issues.

Another factor was usability. While many users already rely on wireless charging and cloud storage, removing the charging port entirely could have caused frustration. It seems the company isn’t ready to take that step just yet.

While Apple decided against a port-free iPhone for now, the company can revisit the idea in the future.
