Android Market adds Movies, Books; gets new interface

The Android Market for smartphones has been redesigned with a new user interface, aiming to make discovery more detailed and navigation easier. It also added two new categories to the market, with the inclusion of videos and books.

The automatic Android Market update, or the new Market client will begin rolling out within the next few weeks, and will be compatible with Android 2.2 or above. The updated user interface will contain much more detailed information in the listing and app pages – with star ratings, product videos, scrollable screenshots and reviews. Pricing

Navigation has also been improved, with a new home screen layout featuring promotions and listings, apart from the categories. Side swipes now allow users to quickly flip pages and sections. Also new, is country-specific sorting, letting users check out their region’s bestselling applications, and trending releases. Google has also “streamlined the click-to-purchase flow”, with a purchase being completed in two clicks from the app details page.

Google has started its Movies and videos section, giving residents of the US the option of renting videos starting from $1.99. Books will be available globally however. Check out the video below, introducing the new Android Market:
