Aluminum battery that can charge your smartphone in 60 seconds

Scientists have developed a new aluminum battery that can charge a smartphone in sixty seconds. Researchers state that the fast charging battery could provide a safe alternative to regular lithium-ion batteries.

A team of researchers from Stanford University have developed the high-performance aluminum battery that can go from flat to full in a fraction of the time it currently takes to pull in enough electricity to fully charge a laptop, smartphone or tablet.

Researchers state that while an iPhone 6 takes approximately two hours to charge fully, the new aluminum battery could charge the device in just sixty seconds. Moreover once charged the battery will last seven times longer than a normal lithium-ion battery. The researchers state that they will be able to improve the battery further over the next few years.

Hongjie Dai, Professor of chemistry at Stanford University states, "We have developed a rechargeable aluminum battery that may replace existing storage devices, such as alkaline batteries, which are bad for the environment, and lithium-ion batteries, which occasionally burst into flames.

"Millions of consumers use 1.5-volt AA and AAA batteries," he said. "Our rechargeable aluminum battery generates about two volts of electricity. That's higher than anyone has achieved with aluminum." He adds, "I see this as a new battery in its early days. It's quite exciting."

Last year, Researchers at NTU had developed an ultra fast charging lithium battery that could charge a smartphone to seventy percent in just two minutes and could last 20 years before it needs a replacement. The battery would be available in commercial markets by 2016.
