1.4 Billion smartphones shipped in 2014, Android rules with 81.2 pc market share.
Android remains the market leader with more than 1.4 billion handsets shipped in 2014. According to the latest data from Strategy Analytics, Android handsets market share was up to 81.2% in 2014 from 78.9% in 2013.
Strategy Analytics report says that in the fourth quarter, 291.7 million Android smartphone models were shipped, nearly 76.7% of all global smartphone shipments. In Q3 2013, 227.3 million Android handsets were shipped. However, the overall large increase in smartphone shipments means that Android actually had a higher 78.3% share of the market in the year-ago quarter.
Apple's iOS is also on the rise with 192.7 million units shipped in 2014. In Q4 2014, Apple shipped nearly 74.5 million iPhones which was 19.5% of the smartphone market. Microsoft's Windows Phone was a distant third with 38.8 million units shipped in 2014, three million more than the previous year. Windows Phone market share dropped to 3%, down from the 3.6% in 2013. Nearly 11.3 million Windows Phone were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2014.
According to a Strategy Analytics report, global smartphone shipments grew 30 percent to reach 1.028 billion in 2014, up from 990 million the year before. Emerging markets like China and Indonesia, drove the smartphone industry's growth.
Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, "Global smartphone shipments grew 30 percent annually from 1.0 billion units in 2013 to a record 1.3 billion in 2014. Emerging markets, such as China and Indonesia, drove the industry's growth last year and they will continue to do so through 2015."
