Infinitec, the makers of the revolutionary Infinite USB Memory device, or IUM, have finally announced a launch date for it – July 1st (starting with US, Canada, and Europe). A product that is set to take the world by storm, the IUM will open nearly infinite avenues in the fields of data streaming/transfer/storage/sharing, and give its users great wireless networking opportunities as well. According to the company, it will retail for “under $129 depending on the location”.

An Infinite USB Memory device

If you missed our previous article on the IUM, then here is a quick run-down on this exciting new product soon to hit shelves. The IUM is a device that creates a ad-hoc WiFi network (2.4GHz to 5GHz) using an 802.11n module, and lets you stream media & data from your PC to a TV, laptop, DVD player, or game console, or just about any device that accepts a USB stick. It is called “infinite” as it can be set to represent any size from 1GB to more than 1TB, mimicking a external hard-drive on any device that you put it in, and requiring nothing more than a software installation (called Infinite Portal) on your PC/laptop and a network dongle. Once you have “paired” your Infinitec device to your host PC/laptop, you can attach it to any USB-accepting device in the area of your WiFi, and stream whichever files you want to it, managing them through the Infinite Portal. The surrogate storage capacity of the Infinite USB Memory device is only limited by the storage capacity of the host PC/laptop (including the servers it is connected to). As the CEO of Infinitec, Ahmad Zahran, says, the IUM is a solution that keeps “your data in the same place while allowing you to share it with anyone without duplicating it."

This “streaming flash stick” has several advantages over any other form of flash drives, SD cards, or external HDDs, as it doesn't require wires, there's no need to backup data, and no need for multiple data transfers. Security of the device is also great – it's is uniquely paired to your machine, and other users cannot access the WiFi network unless you allow them to, and since it contains no data on it, it will not cause data loss if the device is misplaced or stolen.

New information on the product also shows that it will also support full HD (1080p) streaming, and will now function on a variety of operating systems, from Windows 7 & XP to Mac OSX and Linux. The IUM also supports both FAT32 and NTFS file systems, and both USB 1.1 and 2.0. The device also has new measures installed in it “to protect you from any interference or drop in the wireless signal. So you can enjoy your movies and music with uninterrupted playback”.
