Whirlpool introduces India’s first AI-powered Freshness Detection Technology in Luxuriem refrigerators
Whirlpool introduces 6th Sense AI-powered Freshness Detection Technology in its Luxuriem 4-door refrigerator range.
The iFresh sensor tracks ethylene levels every 10 seconds to detect early signs of over-ripening in fruits and vegetables.
The Luxuriem range is available in 645L, 651L and 654L capacities, with prices starting at Rs 98,000.
Whirlpool of India Limited has introduced its 6th Sense AI-powered Freshness Detection Technology in its recently launched Luxuriem range of 4-door refrigerators. The company claims it is India’s first technology of its kind, designed to detect early signs of over-ripening in fruits and vegetables, alerting consumers before the produce spoils and helping reduce food wastage.
SurveyThe technology aims to address a common problem in Indian households, where fruits and vegetables purchased in bulk are often forgotten in the refrigerator and end up going to waste.
How Whirlpool’s Freshness Detection Technology works
The technology uses Whirlpool’s proprietary iFresh Sensor Engine, which incorporates an iFresh Sensor built into the refrigerator’s crisper drawer. The sensor tracks ethylene, a naturally occurring gas released by fruits and vegetables as they ripen.
The refrigerator scans the produce stored in the crisper drawer every 10 seconds and sends an alert when it detects an increase in ethylene levels associated with over-ripening. The technology is designed to account for varying ethylene emissions across different types of produce, including high-ethylene emitters such as apples, pears, kiwis, avocados and peaches, as well as low-ethylene emitters such as lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.
The refrigerator also features a real-time user interface that displays the freshness status of the produce stored in the crisper drawer.
AI learns from user feedback
Whirlpool says the freshness detection system can adapt to how individual households manage their food. When an alert appears, users can inspect their produce and reset the notification. The system records this feedback and uses it to adjust future alert thresholds according to user preferences.
The company describes the technology as an application of on-device AI designed to address an everyday household problem. However, the effectiveness of its freshness alerts and their ability to reduce food waste will depend on real-world performance across different types of produce and storage conditions.
Whirlpool Luxuriem 4-door refrigerator: Price and availability
The new technology expands Whirlpool’s premium Luxuriem 4-door refrigerator portfolio. The range will be available in capacities of 645 litres, 651 litres and 654 litres, with multiple premium finishes.

Prices start at Rs 98,000. The refrigerators will be available through leading retail stores and online platforms across India.
Whirlpool has positioned the new technology as a way to make refrigerator storage more responsive by helping users keep track of produce that might otherwise remain unnoticed in the crisper drawer. While conventional refrigerators focus on preserving food through cooling, the new system is designed to alert users when stored fruits and vegetables may be approaching over-ripening.
