Qualcomm confirms Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 launch at September summit: Here’s what we know
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 continues Qualcomm’s streamlined naming system for flagship processors.
The “Elite” tag signals the chipmaker’s most advanced platform, building on last year’s Oryon CPU.
Xiaomi 17 series will be the first smartphones powered by the new chipset.
Qualcomm has confirmed that it will be introducing the next-generation flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It will be announced at the Snapdragon Summit 2025, scheduled to happen on September 23. The chip-maker has also addressed the speculations regarding the name. Qualcomm explained that the “Gen 5” label does not indicate a skipped generation but represents the fifth iteration of its Snapdragon 8 flagship series.
SurveyFor the unversed, the company introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite as the previous models. The company stated that this oragnised naming convention is meant to simplify the product roadmap for consumers and manufacturers alike.
Last year, the company introduced the Elite badge, which will continue to represent Qualcomm’s most advanced mobile platform. The Snapdragon 8 Elite was notable for introducing the Qualcomm Oryon CPU, a custom-designed architecture aimed at delivering increased performance and power efficiency. Qualcomm positions the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 as the most powerful member of the Snapdragon 8 lineup to date, promising even greater processing power and overall efficiency.
Qualcomm, in its blog post, has also stated that the updated naming system will be implemented with future mobile platforms as part of a larger strategy to maintain product clarity across its portfolio. The move is intended to provide consumers and OEMs with a more consistent understanding of the performance upgrades that come with each new release.
Xiaomi has also confirmed that the Xiaomi 17 series will use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It should be noted that the Chinese smartphone maker skipped the 16 series and went straight to the 17 series, which could be a strategy to compete with the iPhone 17 series. The Galaxy S26 series is also expected to launch with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy.
