OpenAI has launched GPT Live, a new generation of voice models that aims to make conversations with ChatGPT feel much more natural. Instead of waiting for you to finish speaking before replying, GPT Live can listen and talk at the same time. The company says this makes conversations feel closer to speaking with another person. During a conversation, the AI can respond with phrases such as “mhmm” or “yeah” to show that it is paying attention. It can also stay silent if you pause to think.
SurveyAccording to OpenAI, GPT Live is its smartest voice model so far. If a user asks something that needs web search, deeper reasoning or a more complex answer, GPT Live sends the request to OpenAI’s latest AI model in the background. At launch, that model is GPT 5.5. While the background model works on the answer, GPT Live continues the conversation so the flow doesn’t break.

The company says that GPT Live solves problems seen in older voice systems. Earlier versions either relied on several separate AI models or waited for users to stop speaking before replying. This led to delays or interruptions if the AI wrongly thought the user had finished talking.
GPT Live is said to overcome these limitations. “We built GPT‑Live for continuous interaction using a full-duplex architecture. Instead of processing a sequence of separate messages, GPT‑Live continuously processes input while generating output. The model can therefore make interaction decisions many times per second: whether to speak, continue listening, pause, interrupt, or invoke a tool,” OpenAI explained.
With GPT Live, users can interrupt ChatGPT naturally during a conversation. They can ask it to slow down or listen without speaking. OpenAI says the model is also better at ignoring background noise.
“Talking with ChatGPT should now feel much more like a real conversation,” OpenAI said. The company also emphasises that GPT Live includes safety measures that can detect risky conversations, guide the AI towards safer responses and offer support in situations involving self harm or emotional distress.
GPT Live is rolling out globally on iOS, Android and ChatGPT.com. GPT Live 1 will be available for Go, Plus and Pro users, while GPT Live 1 mini will become the default voice model for Free users. Video and screen sharing are not supported at launch, but OpenAI says those features will be added soon.
