In a rare layoff, Apple removes employees across its sales division

Apple has laid off dozens of positions across the sales division globally, marking one of the company’s uncommon instances of workforce reduction. According to the Bloomberg report citing internal sources, the employees were informed about the layoffs over the past two weeks. The report further added that multiple units that manage sales to businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies are affected.

The layoffs impacted account managers responsible for major clients, as well as employees who run Apple’s briefing centres, where institutional customers receive product demonstrations. While the company did not reveal the total number of roles eliminated, some teams were hit harder than others, including those that had worked with Apple for decades.

In a statement, Apple confirmed that changes were underway within the sales organisation, saying the company was making adjustments to “connect with even more customers.” The spokesperson added that only a small number of positions were affected and that employees are free to apply for open positions within the organisation.

For those unfamiliar, the restructuring comes at a time when Apple is expected to report its highest holiday-quarter revenue ever, nearing $140 billion. The latest move comes after another round of job cuts a few weeks ago, when Apple’s sales teams in Australia and New Zealand lost about 20 employees. Workers affected by the current round have until January 20 to find a new role at Apple, after which they will receive severance packages.

According to the report, the layoffs are being presented internally as an effort to streamline operations and reduce overlapping responsibilities. It also stated that some employees believe the shift is due to Apple’s increasing reliance on third-party resellers, which many businesses prefer for purchasing and support.

Apple typically avoids large-scale layoffs, though it has made targeted cuts in recent years due to project cancellations and economic uncertainty.
