Cybercrimes and scams are getting way more common than we would expect them to be. Most scammers target the old and not so tech savvy people as they don’t really know that much about the tech space. Another such scam has surfaced online where a Gujarat man was duped of Rs 36 lakhs to a stock market scam. Here’s what happened with him:

A man from Vasna in Gujarat saw a post on Facebook which promised great returns on investments. Excited about the same, he clicked on the link. He was later on added to a WhatsApp group with 60 other people. In this group, information about the stock market and IPOs was regularly shared.
According to the victim, a group member called Anjana Kapoor asked him to sign up on a specific portal to begin his investment journey. He was then provided with bank details to which he transferred a total of Rs 36.69 lakhs between March 19 and April 18. He was also shown significant gains which made him believe that he was investing in the right place.
Things turned ugly when he decided to withdraw his money. When he attempted a withdrawal, he was asked to pay another Rs 1.74 lakhs as tax. This is when he realised that he was being scammed.
He then contacted the cybercrime helpline. The cybercrime police is now investigating the matter and have filed a case under the IPC for breach of trust, cheating, and criminal conspiracy in addition to the charges under India’s IT act.
To make sure that you don’t end up in a situation like this, never trust anything that you see on social media blindly. Always verify the authenticity of the source before you invest money.
