Govt warns students about fake DigiLocker website amid CBSE OSM row, how to stay safe

While people are still talking about the CBSE OSM portal issue, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has recently warned students about a fake DigiLocker website. The fraud website mimics the official government website but misleads students claiming to offer services such as DigiLocker and CISCE services. In a post shared through its official X handle, MeitY clarified that the website is not linked to the government despite appearing similar to the original DigiLocker portal. Earlier this week, DigiLocker had also flagged the same platform and cautioned users against using it. Officials warned that the fake portal may steal login credentials, Aadhaar-linked information, and access to important personal documents stored in DigiLocker accounts.

Fake DigiLocker website

The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) has recently warned students across the country about a fraudulent DigiLocker website. In a post shared from its official X handle, the ministry said that the portal (http://digilocker.cisceboard.org) is fake and is attempting to mislead users by using the names of DigiLocker and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).

Authorities further clarified that although the website’s interface looks similar to an official service portal, it is not operated by the government. Moreover, DigiLocker had also issued a similar warning earlier this week regarding the same platform, cautioning users against interacting with the fake website.

How does the scam work

How does the scam work

The fake DigiLocker website is mainly targeting students waiting for their exam results. Scammers have created a website that looks exactly similar to the real government portal. Not only this but the names, logos, and designs are also similar.

When you log in to this fake portal, you will be asked to provide all your credentials, such as phone number, password, and Aadhaar number, in order to view the marks/results.

When you enter your credentials, chances are also high that you will get an OTP from the original DigiLocker app and website, and this is how it is done officially. However, this makes you sure that this portal is an official website until you use that code to log into this fake website, giving scammers access to your legitimate DigiLocker portal.

After accessing your legitimate DigiLocker portal, scammers will have access to all those documents which you linked to the portal previously. Some of these documents could be your Aadhaar card, PAN card, your educational documents, and others.

How to stay safe

Here are some points to stay safe:

  • Always check the domain name carefully and ensure that the URL ends with .gov.in before entering any information.
  • Do not share Aadhaar OTPs, passwords, or sensitive personal information on unknown websites.
  • If a website looks unusual or asks for unexpected payments, avoid using it and verify it through official sources first.
