Google Gemini introduces Personal Intelligence: What is it and how it works
Personal Intelligence connects apps like Gmail, Photos, YouTube and Search to tailor Gemini’s answers.
The feature is launching as a beta for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US.
Google says users remain in control, with app connections optional and privacy safeguards in place.
Google appears to be leading the AI race. Why am I mentioning this? Because the search engine giant has added another feature to Gemini called Personal Intelligence. The new feature aims to personalise the AI assistant by securely connecting it to users’ Google apps, much like Apple promised with Siri but failed to deliver.
SurveyHowever, the feature is currently in beta in the United States and is only available to a limited number of paid subscribers. Gemini will be able to provide more personalised responses by leveraging contextual information from apps like Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube, and Search.
What is Gemini Personal Intelligence?
Personal Intelligence is intended to assist Gemini in going beyond basic replies by reasoning via a user’s own data, such as emails, images, and previous searches. Once enabled, users may select which apps to connect to, with Google pointing out that the capability is disabled by default and is entirely under user control.
According to Google, the system excels at two things: interpreting information from numerous sources and obtaining particular facts as needed. Gemini, for example, can identify details in a photo, cross-reference them with emails, and use web data to answer practical, real-world enquiries. According to the business, this makes Gemini more useful for everyday tasks such as travel planning, making buying decisions, and retrieving personal information without having to search manually.
The company has also promised that the data from connected apps is only accessed to respond to user queries and is not directly used to train Gemini AI models. However, the training will rely on filtered interactions such as prompts and responses, with personal data restricted.
Eligibility and how to enable
Access to Personal Intelligence is currently being rolled out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US across web, Android, and iOS. Google says it plans to expand availability to more regions and eventually to free users, while also bringing the feature to AI-powered Search in the future.
Users can enable it manually from Gemini’s Settings by navigating to Personal Intelligence and selecting the Google apps they want to connect.
