Google could bring Apple-style Liquid Glass design to Android 17, reports say
Leaks suggest a new translucent, blurred design inspired by Apple’s Liquid Glass style, focusing on depth and layers.
Building on Android 16, blur effects could expand to volume controls, power menu, notifications, and other system pop-ups.
Google is expected to keep the redesign restrained, with possible performance concerns on older devices still unclear.
The Android interface has been pretty much the same for years now, with a focus on flat colours and sharp edges. However, it looks like this might be about to change with the new Android 17. Leaks suggest that with the new operating system Google may be trying out a new, more translucent look with slightly blurred edges. It appears that Android 17 could look more like iOS than the current Android interface. The new interface, which has been given the codename Cinnamon Bun within Google, has a greater focus on depth and layers, rather than sharp edges and solid objects. It is also rumoured to be more alive and fluid.
SurveyAccording to recent reports, Android 17 will expand on visual ideas first introduced in Android 16. Last year, Google added gentle blur effects to areas such as notifications and quick settings. At the time, the company said this helped create a sense of depth and made information easier to process. Android 17 is expected to take this concept further by applying blur to more parts of the system.

One of the most noticeable changes is expected in how the volume controls look. Unlike the usual pattern where the volume control sits inside a solid bar, the new volume slider could float on a semi-transparent background. This would also allow parts of the wallpaper or the app which is currently in use to remain visible behind it. Similar changes are also expected for the power menu and other system pop-ups that appear on top of apps.

On the home screen, menus may no longer block the background entirely. Instead, app icons and wallpapers could appear softly blurred behind system panels. The colour of the blur is expected to adapt to the user’s chosen theme, helping the overall look feel more consistent across the phone.
While the design direction clearly mirrors Apple’s recent focus on blurred, glass-like effects, reports suggest Google’s approach will be more restrained. The changes are described as subtle rather than dramatic and are not expected to overhaul Android’s entire look in a single update.

However, it is still unclear whether the third-party apps will also receive the same design or if the blur effects will be restricted to basic system services. There are also concerns regarding performance on older Pixel smartphones, as blur effects may consume more processing power. Although Google has not yet confirmed any of these points, rumours indicate that the first developer preview of Android 17 may arrive as early as next year.
