He said, “We’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform.” Samat, who looks after Android system across mobile, wearables, XR, TV, and automotive platforms, hinted that the shift is influenced by laptop usage trends. Google is reportedly studying how people interact with laptops.

Though he did not provide a timeline or technical details on the upcoming changes, reports suggest that this would not be a complete rebuild of a new operating system but a cross-device transition between mobile and laptop, as Android will serve as the base for both. Notably, Chromebooks already support Android apps.

The announcement comes at a time when the latest Android update brings in support for large-screen devices with features like a desktop mode, enhanced window management, better support for external displays, and increased app adaptability.

Additionally, the Android-Chrome OS merge will help Google to better compete with Apple’s iPadOS and macOS ecosystem, offering a unified experience across phones, tablets, and laptops.
