Google adds ChatGPT-like AI Mode to Search: How it will work

Google is now officially bringing a massive update to its search engine with the new AI Mode, a new feature which will add deeper reasoning, follow up capabilities and personalised results much similar to the generative AI tools like ChatGPT. During the Google I/O 2025, the AI Mode was introduced as the next step to existing AI Overviews, which is already available in several countries.

Speaking of how it works, the AI Mode will break the user queries into subtopics and perform multiple background searches, allowing the system to deliver better and context rich responses. The new AI Mode uses Google’s latest Gemini 2.5 language model. This means, the new mode will be capable of giving answers to more complex, multimodal questions that include text, voice and visuals.

The feature is being made available without the need for sign-up via Search Labs, and will appear as a separate tab in Google Search and the Google app in the US over the coming weeks.

Interestingly, the company has also announced that the users will be able to link their Google apps, like Gmail to allow Search to offer better results, as a part of Google personalised context strategy. Raising privacy issues? Google stated that it will notify the users when their data is being used and will have the option to disconnect it any time.

AI Mode will also bring new tools, including Deep Search, which issues hundreds of queries and compiles a fully cited summary, and a Live view powered by the camera for real-time object recognition (derived from Google’s Project Astra and Mariner).

The company is also testing the agentic actions such as helping the users to buy event tickets or make restaurant reservations by processing real-time inventory and automating form-filling across multiple websites. It will also offer auto generated custom charts and graphs for questions involving sports and finance via realtime data sets.

Other countries are expected to get the AI Mode in the coming months. However, the exact timeline remains unknown.
