Bill Gates has shared a lengthy post outlining his concerns about the rapid rise of AI. While he believes AI could bring major benefits in healthcare, education, agriculture and other areas, Gates warned that the world is not doing enough to prepare for its risks. He said AI could become “the greatest equalizer ever invented, or the worst source of injustice”. He also warned that the transition to the new AI era will be “one of the most turbulent times in human history” and we are not prepared for that. In his post, Gates also shared what he believes are three biggest risks of AI.

Gates said job losses could be one of the biggest effects of AI. He expects entry-level and mid-level jobs to face the greatest pressure. He pointed to areas such as sales, customer support, software engineering and paralegal work as some of the jobs that could be affected first. He also expects robots to eventually compete with humans in physical jobs.
“The jobs at most risk are entry- and mid-level, and the new jobs being created will mostly require skills that take many years to learn,” he wrote.
He is particularly concerned about young people entering a job market with fewer entry-level opportunities.

AI may make harmful activities easier
Gates also warned that AI could give criminals powerful new tools. He said the technology could make fraud, deepfakes, disinformation and cyberattacks easier to carry out.
He also raised concerns about attacks on hospitals, financial institutions, power systems and other critical infrastructure. AI could make it easier for attackers to find weaknesses and exploit them.
Gates further warned that increasingly powerful AI systems could eventually act in ways their creators did not intend. “We could lose control,” he said.
AI may affect children and human relationships
Gates’ third major concern is the impact of AI on children and human relationships. He said AI companions may become highly addictive because they are always available and designed to respond in ways users like.
He also said that AI companions could prevent children from developing important social skills because they do not push users outside their comfort zones
Gates also warned that AI could weaken critical thinking if students use it to get answers without doing the mental work themselves. “The same tool that will allow people to learn more than ever could also lead to many people learning less,” he said.
Gates believes governments need to act now. “The highest priority is a monumental task: creating a domestic and international framework for dealing with AI,” he said.
He also suggested reserving some jobs for humans and introducing taxes on AI and robots.
