AI demand could push PS6 launch beyond 2029

Earlier this year, industry analysts hinted that Sony may stretch the lifecycle of the PlayStation 5, possibly delaying its successor until 2028. Now, newer reports indicate the timeline could slip even further, potentially past 2029.

The driving force behind this delay appears to be the global demand for high performance memory and chips, largely powered by AI workloads. Tech giants are investing heavily in data centres and AI infrastructure, which uses the same advanced memory standards that next generation consoles rely on. When supply tightens and prices climb, consumer hardware inevitably feels the impact.

This situation does not affect Sony alone. Microsoft’s next Xbox is also expected to depend on custom silicon from AMD, and any supply side challenge would impact both console makers. With chip development cycles becoming more complex and expensive, manufacturers may prefer to extract maximum value from existing hardware rather than rush into a costly new generation.

Big performance leap expected

Despite the reported delay, leaks around PS6 hardware paint an ambitious picture. The console is rumoured to feature AMD’s Zen 6 based CPU paired with an RDNA 5 GPU. If accurate, this would mark a significant jump in raw performance over the current generation. There is also talk of up to 30GB of GDDR7 RAM, a sizeable upgrade aimed at supporting higher resolutions, faster frame rates and more demanding game worlds.

For comparison, the PlayStation 5 currently uses 16GB of GDDR6 memory. Moving to GDDR7 would not just improve bandwidth but also help future proof the system for advanced rendering techniques and AI driven game design.

That said, the bigger question is whether gamers actually need a new console so soon. Titles like Grand Theft Auto VI and Marvel’s Wolverine are already set to push the PS5 to its limits. With the PS5 Pro also in the mix, Sony still has room to extend the current generation. Unless the PS6 delivers a truly transformative leap, waiting a little longer might not be such a bad thing after all.
