Rainbow Six Siege X 10th anniversary update: Now free-to‑play

Ubisoft has officially flipped the switch with Rainbow Six Siege X. On the 10th anniversary of the popular tactical shooter, a major overhaul will launch on June 10, 2025, and it will be completely free to play for everyone.

Servers will come online after 90 minutes of maintenance across PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, as well as Xbox One and PS4. A total makeover includes five modernized maps at launch, updated audio, dynamic destructible environments, smoother rappelling, an all‑new 6v6 “Dual Front” game mode (limited to next-gen and PC), esports tab, communication wheel, weapon-inspect, and more.

Upon launch, Ubisoft is making it completely free to play so new players can now play Quick Match, Unranked, and Dual Front modes at no cost, however, ranked play remains behind a paywall or upgrade. Long-time players retain all progression, operators, and cosmetics and receive special veteran rewards and badges automatically.

How did we get here?

Rainbow Six Siege originally launched back in December of 2015 and has grown into one of Ubisoft’s most-played multiplayer titles. Known for its operator based gameplay and destructible environments, Siege’s tactical depth set it apart from other shooters. The game is inspired from Rom Clancy’s novel, “Rainbow Six,” adding a layer of authentic military tactics. The X update marks the first time the game has gone fully free-to-play since launch.

Interestingly, the game’s maps are based on real world architecture and famous locations bringing authenticity to each tactical encounter. Siege’s competitive scene also helped it win the “Better with Friends” Award at The Steam Awards, 2018.

Rainbow Six Siege X: Why you need to play

There is no purchase required for core modes which is perfect for new players and discover the evolution.
