PS6 release likely in late 2027 as Sony completes chip design, leaks reveal

Sony’s PlayStation 5 successor, the PlayStation 6 (PS6), is expected to be released sooner than expected. This comes after new leaks suggest that the gaming console could launch in late 2027, which is a little earlier than Microsoft’s speculation that the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation 6 would launch in 2028.

According to KeplerL2, the chipset design for the PS6 is complete and the company will start producing it for testing by the end of this year. The chip that will power PS6 has reportedly passed the pre-silicon validation, and production is gearing up for the testing phase.

As per the reports, the PS6 SoC may run on AMD’s Zen 6 chip and use the advanced 3nm and 2nm process technologies. If true, the new chipsets will be offering a massive enhancement over the PS5’s custom 7nm AMD Zen 2 CPU. Not only that, the gamers may also witness the advanced graphics architecture, possibly based on AMD’s RDNA 5, which was later replaced by a unified UDNA architecture.

According to some speculations, the PS6 might make its debut in late 2027 if Sony sticks to its custom of taking two years from the final chip design to console launch. This would be consistent with Sony’s past release schedule, which saw the PS3 launch in 2006, the PS4 follow in 2013, and the PS5 follow in 2020, all of which were separated by seven years.

While the official timeline has yet to be confirmed, this new information suggests that Sony’s PS6 will arrive earlier than Microsoft’s projections, potentially a year before the expected Xbox release.

Furthermore, reports indicate that Sony has shifted its chip fabrication contract from Intel to AMD, a significant move that may have an impact on the future of PlayStation hardware. With the PS6 now in advanced development, gamers can expect more official details to be revealed over the next few years as Sony prepares for the next generation of its gaming console.
