Classic Resident Evil games are now on Steam

Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis are now available on Steam under the banner of Capcom. Interestingly, these versions are not entirely new. They were previously co-developed with GOG and have been available there for a while as DRM-free releases.

The Steam versions, however, come with an added layer of DRM through Capcom’s The Enigma Protector. This decision may raise eyebrows among PC purists, especially since the GOG versions offered a more flexible ownership model. Still, the pricing makes the deal hard to ignore. All three games are currently available at a 50% discount, bringing each title’s price down to Rs 312. So if you want to revisit the good old days, this is perhaps the best time and way.

What has changed?

While these are the original versions of the games, Capcom has made some important updates to ensure they run smoothly on modern PCs. The games now feature an improved graphics engine along with enhanced DirectX rendering. This helps them scale better across current hardware. Compatibility with modern operating systems is also part of the package, removing one of the biggest barriers that previously made these versions harder to access.

Beyond performance, there are other improvements as well. Players now get better subtitle support, a more refined options menu, and the ability to tweak settings like antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. These additions don’t change the core gameplay, but also make the game look less old. Hence, if you want to experience the original vision of Resident Evil on PC without fighting technical issues, this is arguably the best way to do it right now.
