Baldur’s Gate is coming to HBO, with The Last of Us creator leading the adaptation: All you should know

The video game franchise Baldur’s Gate has been a long-time fan favourite. While the franchise has always remained a ‘niche’ among gamers, a lot changed with the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 back in 2023. Not only did the game become popular, but it went on to win the Game of the Year award, which brought a whole new audience along with it. Well, it looks like the makers are looking to expand their audience base even further, as reports suggest that the popular RPG series is getting an HBO series adaptation very soon. Let’s check out how this will pan out!

Last of Us TV series producer to lead the charge

Last of Us TV series producer to lead the charge for Baldur's Gate HBO series

According to the latest Deadline report, Craig Mazin, the co-creator of HBO’s Last Of Us TV series, will be taking charge of this project. The report states that Mazin will be responsible for creating and writing the show. He’ll be the executive producer and showrunner for the adaptation.

The report has also named the other people involved in the project. As per them, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Gabriel Marano will also be executive producers. While Chris Perkins, the popular game designer known for his work on the Dragons and Dungeons lore, will also serve as a consultant.

The story is to be set after Baldur’s Gate 3

An interesting reveal comes in the form of the story itself. While video game adaptations are usually known to tell the story of an already produced game, for the Baldur’s Gate TV adaptation, the makers are taking a different route. Instead of retelling the story of the latest entry, the story will instead be set immediately after the game.

Mazin has even confirmed this in an interview, saying, “After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created.”

Given that the creators of the game, Larian Studios, are currently busy working on the latest Divinity title, with no plans of a Baldur’s Gate title, it does make sense that they are fine with the TV adaptation being a continuation of the previous entry. Though it’ll be interesting to see whether or not Larian would ever do a follow-up game based on the TV series in the future.
