Sony claims the WF-1000XM6 delivers the ‘world’s best’ noise cancelling in the truly wireless segment as of December 2025, based on its internal research under IEC guidelines. The company states a 25% reduction in noise compared to the WF-1000XM5, particularly in mid-to-high frequencies. In practical terms, this should improve performance in environments such as cafés, trains and aircraft cabins where higher-frequency sounds, including chatter and engine noise, are common. The addition of four microphones per earbud, up from three, should allow more precise ambient sound capture and cancellation.

The new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e works alongside the Integrated Processor V2, which also handles audio processing. The Adaptive Noise Cancelling Optimiser analyses environmental noise and wearing conditions in real time. Sony also claims improved sealing and reduced sound leakage through redesigned ear tips available in four sizes.
The move from 24-bit to 32-bit processing marks a notable upgrade. While many listeners may not distinguish between bit depths in compressed streaming, 32-bit processing can reduce distortion and improve dynamic range when paired with high-quality sources.
Sony has also redesigned the driver unit with a dual-material diaphragm. A softer edge supports deeper bass reproduction, while a rigid dome aims to preserve clarity in high frequencies. The earbuds support Hi-Res Audio Wireless via LDAC, DSEE Extreme upscaling for compressed audio, and 360 Reality Audio with head tracking.
You also get a 10-band equaliser in the Sony Sound Connect app for further sound customisation.
As for call quality, each earbud integrates two microphones and a bone conduction sensor. AI beamforming and noise reduction algorithms isolate the user’s voice from background noise. For commuters and remote workers, this can translate into clearer calls in busy outdoor or office environments.
Connectivity has also been improved. Sony has increased the antenna size by 1.5 times compared to the previous model, aiming to deliver more stable Bluetooth performance in crowded wireless environments. Support for LE Audio also enables lower latency, which could benefit mobile gaming and video streaming.
Battery life remains similar to the previous generation, with up to 8 hours of listening time and a total of 24 hours with the charging case when noise cancelling is enabled. Qi wireless charging is supported, although the charging pad is sold separately.
Finally, but more noticeably, the WF-1000XM6 features a slimmer body than its predecessor. About 11% is the claim. Sony states that the new shape better follows the inner ear’s contours to improve long-term comfort and stability. A revised ventilation structure aims to reduce internal noise from movements such as footsteps or chewing.
The charging case has also been refined for easier one-handed opening and removal of earbuds.
So, key upgrades over the WF-1000XM5 include:
- New QN3e processor for improved noise cancelling
- Four microphones per earbud instead of three
- 32-bit audio processing
- Larger antenna for improved connectivity
- Slimmer design and revised ventilation structure
While battery life and overall feature set remain broadly similar, the emphasis is clearly on refining noise cancellation, call quality and signal stability.
