Chinese display maker HKC has announced the world’s first consumer RGB LED monitor, the M10 Ultra, marking a new attempt to push LCD technology back into the high-end monitor segment dominated by OLED. The M10 Ultra uses an RGB LED backlight with zone dimming to deliver wider colour coverage, higher brightness and improved power efficiency compared to Mini LED LCD monitors.

Price and availability

The monitor will launch first in China, with global availability yet to be confirmed. The monitor’s pricing is yet to be revealed.

Specifications

The monitor features a 32-inch display with a 4K resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate, or up to 330Hz when running at Full HD. The brightness is rated at up to 1,600 nits at peak levels and up to 1,000 nits in full-screen mode.

HKC has not disclosed the exact LCD panel type used in the monitor, but the core innovation lies in its backlight design. Instead of relying on the white or blue LEDs found in Mini LED systems, the M10 Ultra uses individual red, green and blue LEDs behind the LCD panel. This RGB LED approach allows finer control over colour and brightness at the backlight level.

The monitor combines conventional local dimming with RGB sub-LED control, delivering a total of 4,788 light control zones and roughly 1,600 dimming zones. HKC arrives at the higher figure by counting each RGB sub-LED individually. While this remains well short of OLED’s pixel-level control, which effectively offers around 8.3 million controllable pixels at 4K, the company positions RGB LED as a clear step up from Mini LED in both contrast management and colour precision.

Notably, the colour coverage is claimed to be over 98% of the BT. 2020 and 100% of the DCI-P3 gamut. HKC says the M10 Ultra supports HDR workflows aimed at professional creators and offers up to 20 percent lower power consumption than comparable Mini LED monitors.

And for these workflows, the available connectivity options on this monitor include:

  • 2 x DisplayPort 2.1
  • 2 x HDMI 2.1
  • USB Type-C with up to 98W power delivery

OLED monitors continue to dominate the premium space due to perfect blacks and pixel-level dimming, but they remain expensive and raise long-term burn-in concerns for some professional users. RGB LED LCD aims to combine LCD’s durability and brightness advantages with colour performance that approaches, and in some claims exceeds, QD-OLED.

The move mirrors earlier attempts in the TV market, where RGB LED backlights promised higher colour volume but struggled with cost and complexity. HKC’s announcement suggests the technology is now mature enough to reach consumer monitors, at least in flagship form.

For professionals and enthusiasts who want extreme brightness, wide colour coverage and high refresh rates without moving to OLED, the HKC M10 Ultra represents a new option worth watching. However, until pricing and real-world performance are known, OLED and high-end Mini LED monitors will remain the safer choices.

With RGB LED now entering the consumer monitor space, more brands are expected to follow, potentially reshaping the high-end LCD monitor segment over the next year.
