While YouTube already has the live video feature, reports say it has fallen behind Facebook and Twitter.
It seems Twitter and Facebook’s live video feature has caught the attention of YouTube, the big daddy of Internet video. Unlike Facebook though, Alphabet’s YouTube will come up with its own live-streaming app, called YouTube Connect, said a report by VentureBeat. While the basic functionality will remains the same as Facebook’s Live Video or Twitter’s Periscope app, YouTube will reportedly make the app available on iPhones and iPads as well. What remains to be seen is whether it limits features on those device. In the past, Google has been known to limit features on apps like Gmail for iPhones.
According to reports, Google has been lagging behind Facebook and Twitter on the live video front. Even though its YouTube service has the live video option, it seems it hasn’t done as well as Facebook’s Live Video or Twitter’s Periscope. VentureBeat’s source said that YouTube Connect would allow users to login using their YouTube or Gmail account and start live streaming instantly. It will also have tagging and chat features, along with a news feed, which will show the newest videos from those you subscribe to.
Users will be able to view live videos on both the YouTube Connect app and the YouTube website, said the report. In addition, like Facebook, Google will also record the live video once the broadcast is finished.
Having said that, VentureBeat’s report also said that the live video app will not link to Facebook and Twitter at the moment, which means that users will not be able to share these videos on their social media feeds.
