WhatsApp is reportedly planning to introduce a bug update that can change the way users use the platform to connect with their loved ones. The Meta-owned instant messaging platform will bring a username-based system globally by June 2026. With the update, the users will be able to interact without sharing their personal contact details, something that is there for years.

With this, the social media giant aims to offer improved privacy while also making it easier to connect with the individuals, businessmen and unknown people. Both regular users and companies are expected to be able to reserve unique handles, similar to other social media services.
However, the report suggests that the change will not completely replace phone numbers. Instead, it will be offered as an optional feature, giving users the option to continue using their existing setup if they prefer. This is also said to bring smooth transition and avoid disruption for billions of users in the world.
Once the feature is introduced, the users will be able to make a unique username linked to their WhatsApp account. The others will be able to search for and contact them via this handle without needing to access their phone number, much like Instagram.
As per the reports, the system will still rely on phone numbers at the backend for account verification but these details will no longer need to be shared publicly. The users can choose whether to enable username-based communication or stick with traditional methods.
For business, usernames will act as public facing identities, allowing customers to connect directly without saving contact numbers. This is expected to make interactions more seamless while adding an extra layer of privacy for users.
