WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new defence mechanism slated “Strict Account Security Settings” to defend users against targeted cyberattacks. WABetaInfo recently spotted this feature in the Android beta (v2.25.33.4) update. The security feature is expected to lock down certain functionalities within the app to better protect accounts of those at risk. Also, the messaging platform is improving spam protection with a cap on how many messages can be received from unknown accounts in hopes of reducing high-volume, unwanted contact.

What is WhatsApp’s “Strict Account Security Settings” Mode
WhatsApp’s “Strict Account Settings” mode is an optional, centralised security checkup designed to offer a simplified, maximum-security configuration within the messaging app. The feature works as a single switch rather than having users go into different places and manually toggle through multiple privacy and security options, which can either be confusing or take too much time.
When enabled, it should automatically apply the most restrictive settings available to instantly harden account defences. The feature aims at highly vulnerable targets of targeted attacks, such as activists and journalists. Some of the settings are greyed out to prevent inadvertently or maliciously weakening the account when this mode is enabled.

This new, robust security mode integrates several existing and new protective measures under one setting for comprehensive defence. Here’s a comprehensive list of the settings it covers under the hood:
- Blocking media from unknown senders: Automatically blocks photos, videos, and files from unsaved numbers, stopping malicious downloads.
- Silence unknown callers: Mutes calls from unknown numbers, preventing spam and “0-click” exploits.
- Disable link previews: Stops generating link previews to protect privacy and location data.
- Limit profile visibility: Restricts photo, status, and online info to saved contacts only.
- Group invites: Prevents strangers from adding users to unwanted or spam groups.
- Two-step verification: Enforces PIN-based re-registration to stop account hijacking.
- Protect IP in calls: Routes calls through servers to hide user IP and location.
- Security code alerts: Notifies users when a contact’s encryption code changes for verification.

“Strict Account Security Settings” launch timeline
The “Strict Account Security Settings” feature is still in the early stages of development and has not yet been released to beta testers. It was discovered within the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.33.4 build on the Google Play Store but remains hidden for testing and refinement.
Since the feature is still being built, WhatsApp has not shared a release timeline or confirmed rollout date. However, its early discovery suggests that WhatsApp intends to introduce it in an upcoming beta phase before it is eventually rolled out to all users on the Android platform.
