Reliance Jio announces instant messaging app, Jio Chat

Jio App is similar to popular messaging apps like Hike, WeChat and WhatsApp.

Telecom firm, Reliance Jio Infocomm, has launched its instant messaging application Jio Chat for Android and iOS platforms. Jio Chat is available for download from the Google Play Store and Apple App store.

The app is similar to other popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Line, Hike and Wechat and allows users to send messages, do video chat, make voice calls, send stickers, audio notes and emoticons. It also supports location and status sharing features.

Similar to BBM Channels, the app has Jio Chat Channels which allows users to stay updated with the latest news, stories about their favorite brands, celebrities, etc. Once downloaded, the app syncs your contacts automatically and users can send free SMS invites to friends to join their network. The app has an offline chat option, which can be used to store typed messages after which they can be sent once the recipient or user comes online.

The app information in the Google play store states that it connects for free across any mobile data connection or WiFi, "no matter where in the world you are". According to reports the app will be launched for Windows platform soon.

A recent study has revealed that their has been a 113% growth in messaging apps over the last two years in India. The report stated that WhatsApp was the most popular messaging app in the country with over 70 million users, while messaging app WeChat had seen a growth of 2364 percent since Jan last year. 

The report further adds that the number of mobile messaging numbers will continue to see massive growth in the next few quarters, “In the last year, the Indian mobile messaging audience grew by 113 per cent, we expect the number of mobile messaging users to continue to grow in the coming quarters.” Read: Spectrum auction: Reliance Jio's entry heats up competition, MTS stays out
