HIGHLIGHTS

Line messaging announces 'Popcorn Buzz' group calling app, allows you to call 200 people simultaneously.

Messaging app Line has launched a new group calling app called Popcorn Buzz, which  let users engage in group calling with up to 200 people at once. The app is available for download from the Google Play Store for free and required Android 4.0 or higher. The company says it will be launching an iPhone app at some point "in the future" as well.

Line describes Popcorn Buzz as a 'free group call app' that lets users talk with up to 200 people simultaneously. The company says that Popcorn Buzz could be a useful tool for consumers and enterprise users who want to hold massive calls but don't want to pay fees typically reserved for enterprise-focused software platforms to do it. Line says that the app aims to replace business-grade conference call services, like Microsoft owned Skype which can only support up to 25 people on a single group call. The company states, “Popcorn Buzz can be used to talk with friends and family, catch up with classmates, make plans with club members, and more. On top of that, Popcorn Buzz is a perfect replacement for existing paid business-grade conference call services. Popcorn Buzz accommodates both personal and business usage, all for free.”
The firm says that existing Line users can quickly log in to the app and get immediate access to their entire Line friends list. New users can also sign up easily, with just a user name and profile picture. Popcorn Buzz can support calls over Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G networks. To start or invite new users into the call, you will have to share out the 'unique call URL' via a text message, email or chat.

All the active users in a call will be displayed with icons of their profile pictures. The users who are talking will have a green light that will light up below the corresponding icon. The company says that it is planning to add more features in the future including group video chat. Popcorn Buzz is available now in the Google Play marketplace. According to Line, the free download requires Android 4.0 or higher and is available globally. An iPhone version, as well as the addition of group video chat, will be available at some point "in the future."
