Latest Google Maps for Android update brings back Terrain View
HIGHLIGHTS

The latest version 8.1.0 brings back the terrain view, which shows the elevation of geographic features such as valleys, mountains and cliffs.

Google’s latest update to its Maps brings back the popular terrain view feature. Google had omitted the feature from Maps when it updated to version 7 last year, without giving any information why it was done or when will it be brought back.

The terrain view shows the elevation of geographic features such as valleys, mountains and cliffs. The feature was very popular among the trekking enthusiasts. The new update, however, only has one new terrain view feature.

Google Maps recently underwent a massive overhaul with inclusion of several new features. The previous update – rolled out earlier this month – brought lane guidance, improved offline maps and Uber integration.

Improved Offline Maps, the main highlight of the update, allowed users to save a map for offline use. Earlier, saving a map for offline use wasn’t easy. To use, search for an area and tap on its place info sheet, then when available, you can select “Save map to use offline”. You can also add a custom name to the map.

The latest Google Maps update is expected to be available on Google Play store soon.
