Instagram’s Parents Guide is a new resource for parents with teens who use the platform. It aims at making parents more aware of how the platform functions and introduces them to safety tools.
Instagram has released a new resource to help parents of teenagers better protect their children online. Called the Parents Guide, the resource is part of Instagram’s digital wellbeing initiative to keep users better informed of their privacy controls and help them spend lesser time aimlessly scrolling through the platform.
With its new Parents Guide, Instagram aims at making parents more aware of the tools it has to protect the privacy of its teen users. The guide also introduces parents to safety tools such as account blocking, comment controls, manual filters, comment deletion, account muting, offensive comment blocking, time management and more. “We’ve included the basics of our app, and a description of our tools, plus a discussion guide for how parents and guardians can have an open conversation with their teens about Instagram. The discussion questions were developed in collaboration with education and social media expert, Ana Homayoun, M.A., P.P.S., and are designed to help parents and guardians learn more about how teens are using Instagram and to ensure they’re using the app in a positive way. We’re grateful to organizations like the National PTA, Scholastic, ConnectSafely, National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA), GLSEN, Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, PFLAG, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Girl Scouts of the USA, and PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center for collaborating with us on this guide,” Instagram’s Chief Operating Officer Marne Levine wrote in a press statement.
