The anti-phishing security checks will warn users when they click on any suspicious links they receive on the Gmail app on the iPhone or iPad
Google has announced that it is expanding its anti-phishing security checks in the Gmail app to iOS. A similar feature was introduced for the Android app back in May this year. The new feature will show iOS users a warning when they click on a suspicious link in a Gmail messages they receive on their iPhone or iPad. The warnings will be of two types. The first type will only offer caution to users before they choose to proceed and advises users to proceed only if they are confident that there is no risk. If the link is known to be dangerous, the message will be more direct, warning against visiting the original URL.
“These warnings are intended to prevent harmful phishing attacks and help you keep your account safe.” Google noted in it official blog. The update is being rolled out in a gradual manner and should be available for all users within 15 days.
The anti-phishing security checks were introduced soon after many Gmail users were targeted by a phishing scam. The attackers created a non-Google web app, which was named Google Docs. This was then used to send out Emails to users, asking them to edit a document on Google Docs, which appeared to have been shared by a known contact. Clicking on the malicious Google Docs link would be redirected them to a authentic looking Google sign-in screen and asked them to sign in in order to continue to Docs.
