After WhatsApp, Apple may introduce Instagram app for iPads

Meta is reportedly preparing to release the Instagram app for iPad users. According to reports, the social media giant is in the advanced stages of development and testing. This comes shortly after the company announced the much-delayed launch of WhatsApp for iPad in response to high user demand.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Meta employees are internally testing the upcoming iPad version of Instagram and may release the app later this year, depending on how development progresses. Until now, Instagram on iPad has been limited to a scaled-up version of the iPhone app, with a user interface that does not take advantage of the tablet’s larger screen size.

Meta did not create a dedicated iPad app due to concerns about image scaling, layout issues with square posts, and the visibility of lower resolution content on larger screens. However, the report suggests that the company is now more confident in its ability to deliver a high-quality iPad experience. The report also states that the company’s technology stack is now much better prepared to handle the demands of native tablet apps.

However, this is not the first time that rumours about the Instagram app for iPads have surfaced online. Earlier reports hinted at Meta’s internal discussions about expanding Instagram’s reach to larger screens.

The decision to launch a dedicated application could be influenced by several factors. It could be due to the growing popularity of high resolution content and widescreen video, as well as increased competition from TikTok, which already has an iPad-specific app. It could also be due to recent political developments, such as the US government’s pressure on foreign-controlled apps like TikTok and trade tariffs.

While the company has yet to announce the application, it may have a fully optimised layout that supports multitasking features such as Split View, landscape orientation, and improved media viewing. The exact launch date and features are unknown at the moment.
