Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus vs OnePlus 15R: Which phone has faster performance?

Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus vs OnePlus 15R: Which phone has faster performance?

Motorola has been on fire lately for launching smartphones that punch way above their weight. But can its latest mid-range flagship killer, the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus, really keep up with the more powerful OnePlus 15R that comes with a Snapdragon chipset in day-to-day performance? On paper, the OnePlus 15R is a solid phone; it packs the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset, while the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus relies on MediaTek’s Dimensity 8500 Extreme SoC. However, as we’ve seen, a chipset alone doesn’t decide a smartphone’s greatness. There are many other factors as well that make or break a phone, especially the price.

We compared both the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and the OnePlus 15R to see how they perform where it actually matters. We compared them in a series of real-world tests, including 4K video export test, WiFi speed test, gaming performance, display quality, battery life and overall value. Let’s find out which phone offers a better price-to-performance ratio.

Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and OnePlus 15R: 4K video export test

Both the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and the OnePlus 15R were given the same one-minute 4K video for export. Technically, on paper, the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus comes with a less powerful chipset compared to the OnePlus 15R. However, it was still the Motorola that completed the export in just 38 seconds. The OnePlus 15R, on the other hand, finished the same task in 58 seconds (20 seconds more).

That’s a significant difference in practical workload. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 remains the more capable chipset in general benchmarks, in my findings, Motorola’s optimisation for video export was really good here on the Edge 70 Pro Plus.

Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and OnePlus 15R: WiFi performance

In terms of connectivity, we hooked both the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and the OnePlus 15R to the same WiFi network, and both achieved the same download speed of 21 Mbps. We also ran the same WiFi speed test 4-5 times, and the results were almost identical in every scenario.

So, in terms of the wireless connectivity, we didn’t find any real difference, making this round a clear tie.

Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and OnePlus 15R: BGMI gaming performance

BGMI ran flawlessly on both the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and the OnePlus 15R, with support for gameplay at up to 120fps. The good part was that both phones maintained stable frame rates throughout the gaming session without noticeable frame drops or stutters.

While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 has an advantage on paper, it didn’t translate into a noticeably better gaming experience during our testing. That said, both devices did offer a smooth, flagship-grade gaming experience.

Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and OnePlus 15R: Display

The Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus features a 6.8-inch 1.5K quad-curved AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, while the OnePlus 15R comes with a slightly larger 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a 165Hz refresh rate.

The higher refresh rate gives the OnePlus a slight edge on paper. Ever so slightly, the animations and transitions are smoother. But again, in general side-by-side usage, both displays feel exceptionally fluid and responsive.

Moreover, for consuming video content, both displays will give you an immersive experience. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference. Which one do you like more: Motorola’s quad-curved display or OnePlus’ flat panel? Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and OnePlus 15R: Battery and charging

Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus packs a 6,500mAh battery with 90W fast charging, whereas the OnePlus 15R comes with a larger 7,400mAh battery paired with 80W charging.

In terms of sheer longevity, the OnePlus 15R lasts a little longer on a full charge thanks to its bigger battery.

In terms of charging, the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus took 1 hour and 12 minutes to go from 0 to 100 per cent. On the other hand, the OnePlus 15R finished the same task in 1 hour and 16 minutes.

Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and OnePlus 15R: Which phone wins?

As I mentioned the pricing of both the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus and OnePlus 15R at the start, there’s a stark Rs 7,000 difference between both phones.

For less money, if you look at the Motorola, it technically matched the OnePlus in WiFi performance, delivered an equally smooth 120fps gaming in BGMI, and completed the 4K video export 20 seconds faster, making it a strong contender for buyers looking for a strong real-world performance without spending extra. For what it’s worth, the OnePlus 15R still offers the more powerful chipset on paper, a larger battery, and a faster 165Hz display.

However, if everyday performance is your priority, and you have a budget of under Rs 50,000, the Motorola Edge 70 Pro Plus proves that specifications alone don’t define a better smartphone.
