Hands on with the Nokia Lumia 625

Hands on with the Nokia Lumia 625
HIGHLIGHTS

Nokia India launched the Lumia 625 today and we couldn't wait to get our hands on it at the earliest.

Nokia India today announced the Lumia 625, the latest in the Lumia range of phones to be available from tomorrow in India. The phone is the largest screen size ever by Nokia, a whopping 4.8 inches. We were at the launch event today and got to spend a decent amount of time with the phone and here are our thoughts.

The first thing you notice about the Lumia 625 is its incredibly slim profile. The phone measures a mere 9.2mm in thickness, and though it’s not the slimmest, it is definitely one of the slimmer ones. The second thing you will notice is just how light the phone is, looking past which you’re bound to be attracted by the semi-translucent shells that adorn the back. The phone comes in five colours, with the shells being replaceable, just like the older Nokia phones.

We used the phone for a bit and found it good, but the lustre wears off when you realize that it is essentially a Lumia 620 in a revamped body. Sure it houses a faster Snapdragon S4 Dual-Core 1.2 GHz processor, but the RAM is still limited to 512 MB. It comes with 8GB of onboard storage, but so does the Lumia 720. In fact when comparing it to the Lumia 720, we realize that even though the screen may be bigger, it isn’t necessarily better. For starters, since the resolution on both the displays is the same (480×800), it pegs the pixel density on the 4.3 inch Lumia 720 at about 217 ppi, while on the Lumia 625, it drops to about 197 ppi. The biggest downfall of the Lumia 625 is the lack of ClearBlack technology, which the Lumia 720 has, and in our use, we could tell the blacks weren’t as deep as they are on displays with the technology. As far as the form factor goes, the Lumia 720 is just a hair thinner, measuring in at 9mm as against the 9.2mm on the Lumia 625.

What is unique to the Lumia 625 though is the Your Movies app, which gives Lumia 625 users access to a collection of about 3000 movies. The app is exclusive to the Lumia 625 and with every purchase, the buyer will get a complimentary three month subscription. The app allows the movie to be streamed or downloaded in either HD or SD quality (at the discretion of the user) and once the movie is downloaded, it is yours to keep. However, the content cannot be transferred from the phone onto any external device, so the amount of movies you can store will be limited by your phone’s storage (8GB) as the app will also prohibit the storing of movies on the removable microSD card.

There are many other features that one can find in the lower priced Lumia 720, such as a higher megapixel count on the rear camera, Zeiss optics and even NFC. None of these features are available on the Lumia 625, making it look more like a bigger Lumia 620, but just with a higher price. If you’re wondering just how high the Lumia 625 is priced, well, you can pick one up for Rs. 19,999. The Lumia 720 on the other hand can be found for about Rs. 2,000 less across various online retailers.

We have a handy table at the bottom that compares the basic features of the two phones (Lumia 720 and 625) to give you a quick peek at which of the two is a better buy.
