HIGHLIGHTS

Here are the winners of the Digit Zero1 and Best Buy Awards for the Best Performing Tablet of 2022

The Apple iPad Air bagged the Digit Zero1 Award 2022 in this category amidst fierce competition

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra clinched the Digit Best Buy Award 2022 for offering the best price-to-performance ratio

Tablets are usually not as popular as smartphones or laptops. However, with the past two years shifting the focus on remote work and remote study, tablets have emerged as one of the primary machines for work and play for many people. Tablets these days offer enough computing power to handle all kinds of tasks like writing, editing, designing, and much more. The ease of using stylus and pencils, paired with responsive AMOLED displays make tablets the preferred device for those in the creative fields. A space dominated by only a few brands like Apple and Samsung, this year we saw several new tablet launches in India. For this year’s Zero1 Award for the best tablet, we nominated four tablets from Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo, and after a series of stringent performance tests, one tablet emerged as the winner for this year’s Zero1 Award for the best tablet in India.

Winner: Apple iPad Air 2022 (Buy link)

Price: ₹59,900

The 2022 iPad Air was launched earlier this year with the same design as its predecessor, with the only major change being the inclusion of the Apple M1 chip. As expected, the might of the M1 chip helped the Apple iPad Air dominate the performance tests and emerge the winner, amid a tough fight with its closest rival, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. The M1 chip, paired with the number of features and specifications, and the well-thought-over build and design that Apple’s iPad has come to be known for, made the iPad Air the clear winner among the four tablets in the category. The iPad Air comes with a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina LCD display with up to 500 nits of peak brightness. Further, there is a 12-megapixel rear camera and a 12-megapixel front shooter for video calls. Overall, the Apple iPad Air 2022 delivered on all aspects and became the winner of this year’s Zero1 Award by a margin.

Runner-up: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra (Buy link)

Price: ₹1,08,999

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, which is the most powerful Android tablet in the market currently, came a close second to the iPad Air. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, with its massive 14.6-inch super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, offers a super-immersive experience for both entertainment and design purposes. The tablet is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset paired with 12GB of RAM, giving the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra enough power to hold its own, even against higher-level chips like the Apple M1. The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra’s size, however, is a bit too big for the tablet to be convenient for being used as a tablet. It is too big to get any kind of good grip on, and the size doesn’t give the user any confidence while holding the tablet without any kind of protection. The 5.5mm thickness, with this gigantic profile, also makes the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra feel way too fragile. However, where the portability lacks, the performance more than makes up for it, bringing the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra a close second in the race for the best tablet award.

2nd Runner-up: Xiaomi Pad 5 (Buy link)

Price: ₹25,999

The Xiaomi Pad 5, a much-liked tablet this year was our second runner-up for the Zero1 Award for the best tablet. The Xiaomi Pad 5, which was launched to many positive reviews, held its own in a fight against some of the biggest, most powerful tablets in the market currently. The Xiaomi Pad 5 was launched in early 2022 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 860 chipset paired with 6GB of LPLDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. The Xiaomi Pad 5 also has a very good quality WQHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, making it the cheapest tablet to have this kind of premium display. The Xiaomi Pad 5, however, wasn’t able to outperform the bigger tablets it was going up against, like the Apple iPad or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra.

Best Buy: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra (Buy link)

Price: ₹1,08,999

Like several other categories this year, in tablets also the runner-up and the best buy award go to the same device. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, our runner-up for the tablets category, is also this year’s Best Buy winner. With the powerful Snapdragon 8, Gen 1 chipset with ample RAM (12GB) and a beautiful 14.6-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate helped the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra bag this year’s Best Buy award. The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset paired with 12GB of RAM, giving the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra enough power to hold its own, even against higher-level chips like the Apple M1. The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra’s size, however, goes against the whole idea of portability. It is too big to get any kind of good grip on, and the size doesn’t give the user any confidence while holding the tablet without any kind of protection. The 5.5mm thickness, with this gigantic profile, also makes the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra feel way too fragile. However, where the portability lacks, the performance more than makes up for it, making the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra this year’s Best Buy in tablets.
