Whistling or screeching noise in AC

One of the most common sounds that you may hear from your AC unit is whistling or screeching. If you ever hear such a sound, keep in mind that the airflow on your AC is blocked, and due to this, the device has to work harder to keep your room cool while creating high-pitched noises. The common reasons behind this issue are a clogged air filter, restricted airflow, or a blower fan motor that is beginning to wear out.

What you need to do to get rid of this issue is to check out your indoor air filter and give it a thorough cleaning. Should the air filter be too dirty or broken, you will have no other option than to change it. Nonetheless, should the noise continue even after cleaning or changing the filter, the trouble is in the blower motor or its belt.

Rattling or clanking sound from AC

Is your AC making strange noises-1

You may even hear some rattling or clanging noise when the air conditioner is operating. This typically suggests that screws, panels, or fan blades may be loose. If the noise is coming from the outdoor unit, then the fan motor inside may be unbalanced.

Before checking anything make sure that you turn off the power to the device completely and unplug it. Once done, look over the indoor grille and outdoor unit for any loose screws or panels and tighten them. Catching this early can prevent a bigger, more costly problem down the road.

Bubbling or gurgling noise in AC unit

If your AC is producing gurgling or bubbling noises, then it might be due to the trapped water or the clogged drain line. Over time dirt, algae or debris can accumulate inside the drainage system and prevent the water from flowing out properly.

However, if that’s the case, then the fix is easy; all you need to do is locate the outdoor drain line and use a wet or dry vacuum to remove any buildup. This will restore the proper drainage and will eliminate the noise while improving the system’s performance.

Hissing sound from AC

A hissing sound is one of the more serious noises you can ever hear from an AC. It indicates that the refrigerant is leaking or excessive pressure is building up inside the compressor.

If you ever hear this sound, then we advise you to completely unplug your device and avoid using it until it has been inspected.

While it may be difficult for you, a certified HVAC technician can identify the source of the problem in minutes and can carry out the necessary repairs safely.
