Meta sets new rules to tackle unoriginal content on Facebook
Meta has announced new rules focused on cracking down on unoriginal content on Facebook.
Unoriginal content refers to videos, photos or text posts that are reused or repurposed from another creator without credit or permission.
To help creators succeed on Facebook, Meta also shared some best practices.
Meta is making some big changes on Facebook to better support original creators and reduce the flood of copied or spammy posts. The company believes that creators should be celebrated for their unique voices and ideas, not pushed aside by accounts that repost the content without permission.
SurveyOver the years, Facebook has become a go-to platform for sharing creative content, but recently, many users have noticed that the same posts keep appearing over and over. Often, these come from accounts pretending to be the original creators, or from pages trying to grow quickly by sharing viral content made by others.
To fix this and make the platform more rewarding for genuine creators, Meta has announced new rules focused on cracking down on unoriginal content and encouraging more meaningful, original posts.

What’s unoriginal content?
Unoriginal content refers to videos, photos or text posts that are reused or repurposed from another creator without credit or permission. Meta is especially concerned about repeated reposting without any real changes or enhancements.
The company is not against resharing content when users add their own commentary, reactions or creative edits. What they’re targeting is lazy reposting, where someone simply uploads another person’s content to get views or followers, offering no added value.

Steps Meta is taking to tackle unoriginal content on Facebook
Meta has introduced strong measures to tackle unoriginal content on Facebook:
- Accounts that repeatedly post unoriginal content will lose access to monetisation programs temporarily.
- Their overall content reach will be reduced.
- Duplicate videos will be shown to fewer people to boost the visibility of the original creator.
- Facebook is also testing a new feature that adds a link to the original version of reposted content.
Tips to maximise your content’s potential
To help creators succeed on Facebook, Meta shared some best practices:
- Post original content that you created or filmed yourself.
- Add meaningful edits like voiceovers or commentary if using content from others (with permission). Just stitching clips or adding a watermark isn’t enough.
- Avoid very short videos that don’t offer value to viewers.
- Avoid watermarked or recycled content from other platforms.
- Use clear and relevant captions with up to five hashtags and avoid using all capital letters or unrelated links.
Meta says these changes will roll out gradually over the next few months. “Facebook aims to be a place where original content thrives, and creators are rewarded for their hard work and creativity,” the company explained.
