Do children really need smartwatches?
Xiaomi will be announcing its 2016 product range on May 10, but the company has already launched its new smartwatch, which is meant for kids. The device is called the Mi Bunny and will provide tracking information to parents. Also known as the Mitu watch, the device comes with a pre-paid SIM installed, and can be used to receive or make calls. Perhaps the most important feature though, is the SOS feature, which can activated by the child in case of an emergency. The device is priced at 299 Yuan (Rs. 3067 approximately).
While we are expecting a full fledged smartwatch from Xiaomi later, the Mi Bunny is its first. It can connect to devices running on Android 4.2 or above. The device has a LED dot matrix display, which shows only information relavant for kids, and has a “Corning food-grade liquid silicone strap”. It runs on a 300mAh gel polymer battery, which the company claims, will offer a standby time of 6 days.
Parents will be able to set up a safe zone with the watch's app, so if their child moves beyond that safe zone, parents will receive a message. Moreover, when the SOS button is activated by the child, the watch records location data, as well as seven seconds of audio, which is then transmitted to the parent's devices. Parents can also track their children via this watch and Xiaomi says route data (where the child is going) can be recorded continuously for three months.
Xiaomi hasn't revealed any plans to bring this smartwatch to its other markets.
