Samsung Galaxy Rings in the advanced stage: Will it take on Oura or be something more?

Samsung Galaxy Rings in the advanced stage: Will it take on Oura or be something more?
HIGHLIGHTS

Samsung could bring a wearable smart ring that works like the Oura ring.

It could be named Galaxy Ring, which is an easy guess for a Samsung wearable ring’s name.

The Samsung smart ring is deemed to have more prospects than just a health and fitness wearable.

Samsung is reportedly working on an Oura ring alternative called the Galaxy Ring as per the South Korean news outlet The Elec. It is believed to be in the “advanced stage” which means it shouldn’t be long before we get to see the Samsung Galaxy Ring in the flesh. This isn’t the first time we are hearing about this device. Let’s take you through everything we know so far and see if it will be just a wearable device to track health and fitness or if it will be something more.

Samsung Galaxy Ring: An Oura ring competitor?

The thing with big companies like Samsung is that they have the resources and R&D capabilities to bring a new product or feature inspired by a prevailing small player. If successfully played out, this could put the third-party player in danger.

In Apple land, this is called Sherlocking. Samsung also has come up with Galaxy SmartTag as a Tiles alternative.

Now, it seems the South Korean tech titan is eyeing Oura and its smart rings. You wear an Oura ring on your finger like you do with a regular ring, and this thing tracks your sleep, heart rate, and other health stats. It is aimed to help the user improve sleep quality and overall health.

The Elec claims Samsung would go ahead with the production only if the prototypes meet quality standards in terms of design (fitness, comfort, and longevity), tracking accuracy, and power efficiency.

The company should also come up with some unique features to gain a competitive advantage.

Samsung must be working towards all of these things as it would want to capture a pie out of the $747.41 million market share. This is estimated to grow over 25% per year.

So, to excite prospective buyers, Samsung could have something more than health and fitness.

Samsung Galaxy Ring: Headset controller?

Samsung Galaxy Rings

Samsung has announced that it's working on an AR/VR headset in partnership with Google and Qualcomm. The Galaxy Ring could be used as a controller to detect hand gestures for the XR headset. The company has apparently filed a patent for the same. So, let’s see if this Galaxy Ring, in fact, brings this capability. In time, we’ll know.

Update: The wearable could also be called Galaxy Pulse.
