Amazon Vega OS launched for new Fire TV devices, an alternative to Android-based Fire OS
First device with Vega is the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, priced at $39.99 (about Rs 3,500)
Amazon confirms it 'will continue to launch new devices on Fire OS'.
The new Echo devices also run on Vega OS.
Amazon has officially introduced Vega OS, a new in-house Linux OS-based operating system designed for its Fire TV lineup, at the company’s annual hardware event. The shift marks an alternate path from Android TV-based Fire OS with emphasis on performance, efficiency and possibly tighter control over the ecosystem. At the same event, Amazon announced the Fire TV Stick 4K Select as the first device to ship with Vega OS. For users, this means new Fire devices will offer a fresh software experience distinct from prior Android-based Fire OS. For developers and ecosystem players, it means rebuilding or porting apps to a new architecture. Here’s everything else we know:

Specifications and platform details
As mentioned already, Vega OS uses Linux as the foundation and web frameworks for scalability across a variety of devices. The company professes that the OS is designed to work with small footprint devices, like a Fire TV Stick, to more advanced devices with on-device AI processing, like our Echo Show. The new Echo devices also run on Vega OS.
The new operating system thus drops Android dependencies and Google frameworks that are part of Android TV-based Fire OS. This could mean Amazon gains full control over updates, features, and ecosystem decisions.

Having said that, Amazon confirms it ‘will continue to launch new devices on Fire OS’. The company adds that it will ‘continue to launch new features and devices on Fire OS and support existing experiences’. Amazon hasn’t explicitly said anything about the Vega OS update for existing Fire TVs.
Vega OS appears to be lightweight, as its debut device, the Fire TV 4K Select, runs on 1GB RAM, which is a first for a 4K Fire TV model, as noted by AFTVNews. And as for app support, the Fire TV 4K Select is compatible with leading streaming services, and will soon support Xbox Gaming, Luna, and Alexa+.
The Vega OS-based Fire TV UI also looks familiar to the Android TV-based variant. But a key change would be that for ‘enhanced security, only apps from the Amazon Appstore are available for download.’
Unless you are a power user, the transition may not be immediately noticeable. Amazon just needs to ensure core apps are ready for the new OS, and it may have to incentivise developers for this. In time, we will see how this pans out.
