Windows Phone 7.8 update begins rolling out for Nokia Lumia 800
The Windows Phone 7.8 update for Nokia Lumia 800 has finally started rolling out to phones across the globe. We’ve been checking for the update on our Lumia 800, but so far, it would seem that the update has not been seeded to the Indian servers.
The update to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform brings to the older, Windows 7.5 Mango devices the same look and feel as the Windows Phone 8 OS. After the Windows Phone 7.8 update, the Lumia 800’s lockscreen will be the same as the one on the newer WP8 devices. Even the resizable Live Tiles will make their way into the UI of Windows Phone 7.8. There’s also the ability to make Google the default search engine within IE. However, the two biggest additions to Windows Phone 7.8 will be the Rooms feature and the Xbox Live integration, two of the biggest features of Windows Phone 8.
Microsoft has already expressed their strong commitment to the Windows Phone 7 lineup of devices, saying that the OS is going to continue to receive love from the Redmond outfit. The Windows Phone 7.8 update is supposed to bring the older devices at-par with the newer phones, at least with respect to software based features. What gets left out is features like NFC or wireless charging, support for a microSD card etc., essentially features that are more hardware related than software.
Windows Phone 7.8 was announced in June of this year, as an attempt to bridge the gap that was created with the jump to Windows Phone 8. If you’re keen on getting this update, we suggest you keep your Lumia 800 connected to Zune all day, periodically checking for updates.
