Using a Pixel 6a? Google’s new update could shorten your phone’s battery life, here’s why

If you use a Pixel 6a, you’ll want to pay attention to an important update coming your way. Starting July 8, Google will roll out a mandatory software update for all Pixel 6a devices to help prevent possible battery overheating. While the update will be installed on every Pixel 6a, it will only affect certain phones Google has identified as “Impacted Devices.”

The update is part of Google’s effort to reduce the risk of battery-related issues. Recently, there have been at least two reports of Pixel 6a phones catching fire, reports The Verge. In response, Google is taking steps to prevent this from happening again. One of these steps is to automatically reduce the battery capacity on affected phones after they’ve been charged 400 times.

According to Google, users with impacted devices will receive a warning once their phone hits 375 charging cycles. This notice will let them know that the new battery protection system is about to start working.

When these changes go into effect, users may notice that their phone’s battery doesn’t last as long between charges. Charging might also feel slower, and the battery indicator could temporarily show unusual readings as the phone adjusts to the changes.

Google hasn’t explained why only some Pixel 6a devices are affected, but they are offering free battery replacements for those that are. If you want to know whether your phone qualifies for a replacement, Google has set up a website where you can check.

This isn’t the first time Google has faced battery problems with its phones. The company offered free battery replacements or a $100 discount on a new device for Pixel 4a users who experienced similar issues. Google also has an extended repair program for Pixel 7a devices with swollen batteries.

“If you own a Pixel 6a, you can manually download the latest software update starting on July 8, 2025. Otherwise, the software update will be automatically downloaded to your device when the software is released and your device is charged and connected to the internet,” the tech giant explained in a support page.
