If rumours circulating the Internet are to be believed, then Samsung’s next smartphone, the Galaxy S7, could take on the iPhones' 3D Touch capability with its own version of the technology.
If there is one company that aims to give Apple a run for its money in the smartphone business, it’s Samsung. The South Korean giant is expected to launch three Galaxy S7 smartphones at MWC 2016, which kicks off in February. If information circulating the Internet is to be believed, then Samsung is working on its own variant of Apple’s 3D Touch technology. This information has been part of the rumour mills for quite some time now, and the fact that it has resurfaced close to the launch of the Galaxy S7 smartphones makes us believe that Samsung may indeed be working on this technology.
This is not the first time that an Android smartphone-maker aims to incorporate technology that Apple premieres on its phones. Apple launched the iPhone 4S in 2011, with Siri as its biggest USP. Today, we have the likes of Android Now, Cortana and more available. Apple was the first to launch a 64-bit smartphone with the iPhone 5S, and we have seen Android follow suit.
Apple announced 3D touch with the launch of the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. The 3D touch technology also made its way onto the Mac’s trackpad in the form of Force Touch. 3D Touch technology is still in its nascent stages, and there are only a handful of apps and games that support it. Nonetheless, it is an interesting piece of technology and Samsung wants to cash in on it as well.
Other information circulating the Internet suggests that Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge and the Galaxy S7 Edge+ at the same time at MWC 2016. Coming to the specifications of the Galaxy S7, S7 Edge and the S7 Edge+, it is likely that the devices will launch in two variants, one powered by the Snapdragon 820 SoC and the other by Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 processor. It is also speculated that the phone will come with a 12MP primary camera, with an aperture of f/1.7, aiding low light photography. If other speculations are to be believed, then the Galaxy S7 may come with a 5.1-inch QHD (2560×1440 pixels) display instead of the previously-rumoured 5.5-inch QHD (2560×1440 pixels) display. Coming to the other specifications, the Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S7 Edge+ the smartphones are expected to house 4GB RAM with 32GB and 64GB storage variants. With the iPhone 6s already available in 128GB storage variants, we think Samsung will also launch a 128GB of built-in storage. We also think that the smartphone will support expandable storage of upto 200GB, via a microSD card.
It is unlikely that Samsung will announce the Galaxy Note 6 at MWC. In the past, the company has not launched a Note device at MWC, and we don’t think it will break tradition.
