The Exynos 5 Series 7872 SoC sports a Cat 7 LTE modem which is slated to deliver download speeds of up to 300Mbps.

Samsung has announced its latest Exynos 5 Series 7872 SoC, which will power some upcoming mid-range smartphones. It is a hexa-core SoC built upon the company’s 14nm manufacturing process. It features two Cortex-A73 high-performance cores, which handle tasks such as gaming and four Cortex-A53 cores for low power consumption.

The processor sports a Cat 7 LTE modem which boasts of 300Mbps download speeds, support for two carriers and 150Mbps upload speeds. Samsung says, “it supports almost every network of 2G, 3G and 4G such as CDMA, GSM, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, LTE-FDD and LTE-TDD modes. For global location positioning coverage, the processor embeds a GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver.” The SoC features connectivity technologies like Wi-Fi, FM radio, GPS, GLONASS,  and comes with Bluetooth 5.0.

The company claims that the single core performance of Exynos 7872 has doubled, compared to its predecessor. Also, the chipset features an improved Image Signal Processor (ISP) and Multi-Format Codec (MFC) that can support up to 21.7MP sensors for both the front and rear cameras.

The ISP also enables the chipset to support an iris sensor support of up to 8MP and enables capturing Smart WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) images with hardware support. The Exynos 7872 is also capable of full HD video encoding and decoding at 120fps with H.265 (HEVC) and H.264 codecs, owing to the enhanced MFC. It features the Mali-G71 GPU for handling graphics-intensive tasks and can support up to 1920 x 1200p display resolution.

The recently launched Meizu M6s is powered by the Exynos 7872 platform. Meizu says it’s the first smartphone to ship with the new Samsung SoC. The smartphone sports a bezel-less design and comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. You can read more about it here.
