LG G7 ThinQ will feature a dedicated Google Assistant button: Report
HIGHLIGHTS

The LG G7 ThinQ will be the first smartphone to feature a dedicated Google Assistant button. Just like Samsung’s Bixby button, users will not be able to reprogram the Google Assistant button on the LG G7 ThinQ to bring up other apps.

LG is set to launch its next flagship smartphone, the LG G7 ThinQ, on May 2. Ahead of the launch, several leaks about the upcoming flagship device have already occurred, including a that of a poster revealing the very design of the phone. Joining the leak spree, CNET has discovered that the LG G7 ThinQ will feature a dedicated physical button for Google Assistant. Similar to the Bixby button on Samsung flagships, the Google Assistant button on the LG G7 ThinQ will bring up the digital assistant from Google with one tap, without having to use the Google app.

The addition of a physical button for Google Assistant on LG’s new flagship is an important indicator of the deepening partnership between the two companies. LG previously partnered with Google to bring the Assistant to its 2018 line-up of OLED  and Super UHD televisions. The company also refreshed its V30 smartphone with more AI capabilities and 32 exclusive Google Assistant commands at the Mobile World Congress this year.

For the LG G7 ThinQ, CNET reports that the physical Google Assistant button is also expected to be feature exclusive commands which would function solely on the LG smartphone. The report further says that just like Samsung’s Bixby button, users will not be able to reprogram the Google Assistant button on the G7 ThinQ to call up a different app.

The LG G7 ThinQ will be the company’s first flagship smartphone announcement of the year and the first phone to feature a dedicated Google Assistant button. The device is expected to feature an iPhone X-like notch on top of the display, while maintaining a thin bezel design. The phone is also expected to rely heavily on AI as one of its main selling points. In terms of button placement, the G7 ThinQ is rumoured to house the power button on the right side, while the Google Assistant button is expected be placed on the left. The fingerprint sensor will remain at the back of the device.

Previously leaked renders of the smartphone also suggest that it could be launched in five colour variants – Platinum Grey, Raspberry Rose, Aurora Black, Moroccan Blue, and a matte version of Moroccan Blue, which will reportedly be available for select regions and network carriers.
