Huawei wins big in 2015, emerging markets drive phone sales growth
HIGHLIGHTS

Huawei's market share was driven by growth in both Chinese and European markets.

Research and analysis firm Gartner has confirmed what has been said about the smartphone market for a while now. In its report on the sale of mobile phones worldwide, the company noted that the demand for affordable smartphones in emerging markets drove global sales of these devices in the third quarter of 2015. According to the report, global smartphone sales to end-users totalled 353 million units, which accounts for a 15.5 percent growth, compared to the same period in 2014.

According to Anshul Gupta, Research Director at Gartner, "The availability of affordable smartphones in emerging markets saw consumers upgrade their 'feature phones' to smartphones more quickly because of the small price gap.” Gupta also noted that the sale of smartphones in emerging markets grew to 259.7 million in Q3 2015. This is an 18.4 percent rise, compared to Q3 2014. On the other hand, sales in mature markets increased by only 8.2 percent, in the aforementioned period.

Further, the Gartner report also states that Apple continued to dominate the premium smartphone segment, while Chinese OEM Huawei enjoyed success in 2015, with strong sales, both in its home market and otherwise, especially in Europe. Huawei’s total market share grew by 2.5 percent — from 5.2 percent in Q3 2014, to 7.7 percent in Q3 2015, while Samsung’s share dropped by 0.2 percent, to 23.7 percent. Apple, on the other hand, saw growth from 12.5 percent market share last year, to 13.1 percent this year. Both Lenovo and Xiaomi lost their market shares, from 7 and 5.2 percent respectively, to 4.9 percent each.

Based on the market shares of these companies, it is not surprising that Android continued in dominance in terms of the operating system. While Android still boasts of more than 80 percent market share, Apple’s iOS grew from 12.5 percent to 13.1 percent. Microsoft’s Windows, though, dropped to 1.7 percent, while BlackBerry’s BB OS and other operating systems took 0.3 percent.
