Google entered the foldable market with the Pixel Fold last year. Pixel Fold is a foldable smartphone introduced in May of last year and is powered by Google’s in-house Tensor G2 chipset. Now, a leak has revealed key specifications of the Pixel Fold 2. The Pixel Fold 2 will arrive as a successor to Pixel Fold.

A source has informed Android Authority that Google has been testing the Pixel Fold 2 internally for the last few months.

Initial prototypes of the Pixel Fold 2 device featured Google’s Tensor G3 chipset, known internally as “zuma,” but recent prototypes have transitioned to the speculated Tensor G4 chipset, with the codename “zumapro.”

This suggests that Google might use the Tensor G4 chipset in the Pixel Fold 2 instead of the G3. In the past, the Pixel Tablet was supposed to have the first-gen Tensor chipset but ended up with the second-gen one. Its codename changed during development too. So, the same might happen with the Pixel Fold 2, currently codenamed “comet.”

If Google decides to switch to the new chipset, it might also change the launch timing for the new foldable device. The first Pixel Fold was introduced in May 2023 at Google I/O, so a similar timing could be expected for its successor. However, if Google intends to use the Tensor G4 chipset in the Pixel Fold 2, it might delay the launch until its fall hardware event, where it typically unveils new chipsets.

If Google sticks to launching the Pixel Fold 2 at this year’s I/O, it’s less likely to feature the newer Tensor G4 chipset.

According to the source, some recent prototypes of the Pixel Fold 2 feature 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. In comparison, the previous year’s Pixel Fold had a starting configuration of 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.
