Gionee has announced the successor to its “slimmest smartphone”, featuring a 13MP camera and MediaTek octa-core processor

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Gionee has announced the launch of S5.1 Pro. The new smartphone is an upgraded version of last year’s Elife S5.1. Keeping the design philosophy intact, the S5.1 Pro sees an all round improvement in the hardware department. Curiously though, the phone has been launched sans the Elife tag.

Last year, Gionee released its slimmest smartphone ever, the Elife S5.1, with a thickness of just 5.15mm. The S5.1 is only marginally thicker at 6.35mm. It comes with a 5-inch 720p AMOLED display with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 4 protection. Underneath is a MediaTek MT6753 chipset with a 64-bit octa-core 1.3GHz Cortex-A53 CPU, Mali-720MP3 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. It has 16GB of storage that is expandable up to 128GB via microSD card. The S5.1 Pro sports a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and an 8MP secondary camera. The camera application has a host of modes and intelligently applies effects by guessing the age and gender. It features a 2,400 mAh non-removable battery. It has dual-SIM support as well as LTE Cat. 4 connectivity. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, A-GPS and micro-USB port.Weighing 129g, the S5.1 Pro has dimensions of 145.1X70X6.35 mm. It runs a custom Amigo 3.0 UI layered on top of Android v5.1 (Lollipop). Similar to the Elife S5.1, it has a glass back with metallic side frame.

Even though Gionee isn’t participating in the ongoing IFA 2015 in Berlin, it has announced the device in China, where it has a considerable market presence. The device will be up for purchase later this month. We can expect it to be released in other Asian markets soon. There has been no word about the pricing. However, it is expected to cost about 1899 Yuan (Rs. 20,000 approx.). Gionee is putting a high premium on the looks and design of the handset. It is offering mid-range hardware at a price point where most competitors are providing far superior hardware. It will be interesting to see how that plays out for Gionee.
